Minimizing: The Hair Styling Stash - What I Kept

minimizing hair care stash what is left rottenotter rotten otter blog 4 minimizing hair care stash what is left rottenotter rotten otter blog 3 minimizing hair care stash what is left rottenotter rotten otter blog 2minimizing hair care stash what is left rottenotter rotten otter blog 1
The other week I posted about how I was trying to minimize my hair styling stash and shared a photo of a basket overflowing with products. Even though the basket is still pretty full I've managed to narrow it down to 15 products. At some point I'd like that number to go down even more.

I decided to keep all five hair oils as this is the one product I use on a daily/weekly basis. My favourite two are from Ojon and Moroccan Oil and I'm still trying to make up my mind about the Kerastase oil.

I've kept a couple of products that I still need to try out and I'll either keep or pass along once I know how they work. These include the leave-in conditioner from Milke_Shake, Living Proof Styling Cream which was a Birthday sample from Space NK. My birthday is in June and I still haven't gotten round to trying it out. I'm still working out if I like the Bumble & Bumble products  but for now they're staying put. The Bed Head cream is an old favourite for when I curl my hair and want it to look a bit more loose and natural.

For the basics I kept a strong hold but natural feeling hair spray, a mini bottle for traveling/hand bag and a heat protector for when I occasionally curl my hair. I also moved my dry shampoos to the bathroom as that is where I use them.

Holy Grail: Mario Badescu Control Cream

mario badescu control cream
I've had two patches of eczema on my face for at least five months. One on my eye brow and other on my top lip/cupids brow. I've literally tried every single cream that I own and nothing has worked. The only cream that didn't irritate my skin was Weleda Skin Food but it just wasn't doing anything for the eczema or the dry skin.

I was starting to get fed up about it as it was getting worse and more irritated so I booked an appointment to see my doctor and to get a prescription for it. I really didn't want it to get to this stage as I've had bad reactions to creams I've been prescribed in the past but I made an appointment anyway.

Later on that day I watched Megans February favourites video in which she featured a Mario Badescu cream. When she was describing her eczema it sounded just like she was describing my own. She said she noticed immediate effects and the redness was gone. I was sold and ordered it immediately.

It arrived a few days later and I applied it to both areas straight away. Luckily I didn't notice any stinging like Meg did even though I have very sensitive skin. After applying it once I noticed a massive difference. All the redness was gone and the skin felt normal again. The dryness did take a few more days to go but I was able to cancel my doctors appointment. I also didn't need to apply any steroid cream to my face which I was so happy about.

If you've got any stubborn eczema patches that just aren't going away despite trying a whole load of creams then give this a try. It might just work miracles like it has for me.

I bought it from BeautyBay.com for £14.95.

Beauty Box: Birchbox March 2013

birchbox beauty box march 2013 rottenotter rotten otter blog 2 birchbox beauty box march 2013 rottenotter rotten otter blog 1 birchbox beauty box march 2013 rottenotter rotten otter blog 3 RMK Cleansing Balm - This smells divine, like freshly cut roses. I want to finish the cleanser I'm using at the moment first before giving this a go but I'm excited to try it. I love cleansing balms so have pretty high expectations for this already. It's a pretty decent size so I should be able to use it properly.

Molton Brown Valbonne Fragrance - I know a lot of people don't like getting perfume samples in beauty boxes but I really don't mind. I like trying new scents and they're perfect to keep in your bag. This is a mix of bergamot, orange flower, rose, vetiver and leather.

Yu-Be Moisturising Skin Cream - I don't think I've ever finished a beauty box sample before actually taking photos and posting about it but it happened with this cream. I tried a bit on my hand when I first opened the box the other day and instantly loved it. I've mainly been using it as a hand cream. It sinks in very quickly and has a camphor scent which has been working wonders for my blocked nose this weekend. If you're not a fan of the scent though it disappears after about a minute. Once my spending ban is over I'm going to use my Birchbox points and buy the full size.

Laura Geller Inkwell Waterproof Gel Liner - I haven't tried this out yet as I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it or pass it onto a friend. I don't wear gel eye liner as it doesn't suit my eye shape.

Lindt Lindor Chocolate - Although this probably should have been included in last months box seeing as it was Valentines, I was very happy to see it. Lindor is one of my favourite chocolates and these were eating while I was opening the box.

Sanctuary 30 Day Thermal Transformation Mask - I already have a sample of this from a Glossybox which I've yet to use.

I think I'm missing the La Sultane De Saba mody lotion as it's on the list of products but wasn't my box. I'm waiting for a reply from Birchbox so we'll see what they say.

Pixi Paradise Pink - NOTD

pixi paradise pink notd nail polish rotten otter rottenotter blogSupplies used...
OPI Matte Nail Envy
Pixi Paradise Pink
China Glaze Fast Forward

Unfortunately I can't find this nail polish from Pixi online so I'm not sure if it's still available. I bought mine in an ASOS sale a long time ago. I bought it in the hopes it would be a good dupe for Eyeko Punk Polish which is now discontinued. It isn't at all like Punk but still a nice polish.

It's a neon so it dries matte but I prefer to add a top coat to make it glossy as well as to last longer. Two coats is needed but the second didn't apply to well. Nothing a thick layer of top coat couldn't hide though.

Latest Additions: Despite A Spending Ban

I may have added a few Lush items for myself while ordering my mums Mothers Day present. Don't tell anyone though as I'm meant to be on a 100 day spending ban! I just couldn't resist these limited edition items and knew they'd be discontinued by the time the ban is over.

This manicure was completely inspired by Kaylah at Dainty Squid and it's become one of my favourites. I've ordered some of the nail stickers Kaylah uses so once they arrive I'm going to give the whole manicure a go. I think I might try using Models Own Concrete Mixer next time though.

In Kaylah's post she asked - When you paint your nails do you start with your thumb or pinky nail first? I paint my right hand first as I find it the hardest since I'm right handed. I paint my pinky first and thumb last. I then go and paint my left hand the same way, pinky first and thumb last. How do you paint your nails?

Beauty Box: Glossybox March 2013

glossybox march 2013 rottenotter blog 1 glossybox march 2013 rottenotter blog 3 glossybox march 2013 rottenotter blog 2
I'm so pleased Glossybox have started releasing their boxes earlier in the month. With Birchbox still being released later in the month they're more spread out so I think I appreciate them both a bit more if that makes any sense. Instead of them both arriving near enough on the same day.

My March Glossybox* arrived last week so I've actually had a bit of a chance to try the products before posting. I'll still only be able to give my first impressions but it's better than just looking at the products.

Renu Flash Relax Mask - This face mask claims an instant face-lift effect. As it's for mature skin I'm going to see if my mum wants to give it a try one night. It smells of ginseng which I like.

L'Occitane Brightening Hand Cream - I love L'Occitane hand creams and already have a tube of this from another beauty box. While this isn't my favourite hand cream from L'Occitane, it works. I'm just not a huge fan of the scent and prefer some of the others the brand offers.

Jelly Pong Pong Lip Blush - I'm not a huge fan of Jelly Pong Pong products but this is one that I actually like! It's very similar to Clinique Chubby Sticks but it's a bit more of a stain meaning the colour lasts a lot longer. It isn't as moisturising though.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant - I'm a huge fan of 8 hour cream and already have a jar of it. This little tube will be perfect for my handbag as I currently carry round a little depotted jar of it. I mainly use this for my lips but  you can apply it to any dry areas of skin. I also didn't realise until using it, this is the scent free version. I like the scent of the original but I know a lot of people don't like it so this is perfect.

Pearlys Teeth Brightening Powder - This is the only product I haven't tried yet. It's a tooth whitening powder which you dip your toothbrush into and brush your teeth. I'm a little scared of trying it but I'm sure I will at some point.

Glossybox is £10 (+P&P) a month for 5 deluxe sized samples from a range of beauty brands.

The Ugly Nail Polishes

green yellow nail polish choices rottenotter blog 2 green yellow nail polish choices rottenotter blog 1
Lately I've become obsessed with yellow-green nail polishes. Most people probably hate this kind of shade but I absolutely love it. I always tend to pick the "ugly" polishes as my favourite.

China Glaze Trendsetter is a bit different to the others. First of all, it contains glass flecks while the rest are creme. It's also a lot darker and has more brown in it. The formula for this one is perfect and only needs two coats.

OPI Fiercely Fiona is one of the newest additions to my yellow-green family. Along with Who The Shrek Are You, I managed to get it for £5.99 from Fragrance Direct. I thought I'd have to pay £10 or more for it as the Shrek collection came out ages ago and I only just decided I needed it. This is the yellowest out of them all and reminds me of bananas.

Models Own Aciiid is a pretty good dupe for OPI's Did It On Em from the Nicki Minaj collection. It's also easier to get a hold of and cheaper.

China Glaze Electric Pineapple is a slightly lighter version of Did It On Em. I love pairing it with CG's Whirled Away.

The only down side to Did It On Em is the formula, it does need three even coats otherwise it looks a bit streaky.

OPI Who The Shrek Are You? is exactly the same shade as Shrek. OPI couldn't have chosen a better colour! This one is pretty hard to find cheaper than full price but if you want it, keep an eye out on Fragrance Direct as it might come back in stock at some point.

Despite the name, Barry M Acid Yellow is definitely more green than yellow. If I'd tried this polish before buying I probably wouldn't have bothered as the formula is pretty poor. I thought I'd still include it but it's streaky after three coats.

China Glaze Def Defying is the greenest out of them all. Like all the other CG polishes I've featured, the formula is pretty much perfect. Opaque in two coats, dries glossy and quickly. This is another one I like to pair Whirled Away with.

And finally Barry M Lime Green looks like a pretty good dupe of Def Defying in the bottle but once on the nails it's definitely different. Lime Green is sheerer so looks a lot lighter. This is another one that needs at least three coats.

Nail Polish Rack: Spring 2013

nail polish rack spring 2013 rottenotter blog 2 nail polish rack spring 2013 rottenotter blog 1 nail polish rack spring 2013 rottenotter blog 3 nail polish rack spring 2013 rottenotter blog 4
The other week I bought a new bookcase and after filling it up with books, perfume and other trinkets there was a huge space left over. I've been thinking of buying a nail polish rack for a while and the empty space was just the right size for one. After a few days wait while my order came through, a lot of picking and swapping colours, I had my very own spring nail polish picks out on display.

I've included most of the polishes from my Spring Picks post and pulled more from the same colour groups, mainly sticking with OPI and China Glaze. If you want to know names of the polishes let me know in the comments and I'll tell you. I'm also planning on switching up the colours for each season and posting about them. I'm already thinking of which polishes I'm going to choose for summer!

I don't know if this is the case for all nail polish racks for sale but for me, China Glaze polishes only just fit it and it's a pretty tight squeeze. Apart from that, I'm really happy with it. It was a great price, £10.47, quick delivery and well made. I bought mine from Amazon but you can buy them from Ebay as well.

Nail Polish Picks: Spring 2013

spring 2013 nail polishes rottenotter blog 1 spring 2013 nail polishes rottenotter blog 2 spring 2013 nail polishes rottenotter blog 3
OPI Skull & Glossbones // OPI The Living Daylights // W.I.P Blueberry // Orly Gumdrop // OPI Lucky Lucky Lavender // OPI Got A Date To-Knight // Orly Cotton Candy.

These are the nail polishes I know I'll be wearing a lot this spring. I'll probably be wearing them right through summer as well but mixing in a few brighter neons. I just love the pastel shades and creme polishes so spring is my favourite time as far as polish goes.

OPI's Skull & Glossbones was a no-brainer for me as it's one of my favourites. It's a grey with a hint of green that works well as a nude.

I've chosen OPI's The Living Daylights as my only glitter for my Spring picks. As it's a mix of colours it goes with everything. I especially love it over Skull & Glossbones either as a top coat or a glitter gradient.

W.I.P Blueberry from Urban Outfitters is a pretty new polish for me. It reminds me of a lighter version of H&M Blue My Mind. The only downside of this polish is that it stinks!!

I haven't gone for one of my usual mint greens this year, Essie Mint Candy Apple or Revlon Minted. Instead I've gone for a slightly darker version, Orly's Gumdrop.

I love pinky purples and Lucky Lucky Lavender has to be one of my favourites. I find they suit my skin tone very well and just look really nice on the nails.

Got A Date To-Knight is on the sheer side so does need about three layers but it's such a pretty colour. It almost has a jelly finish to it.

And finally, Orly Cotton Candy. I rarely find a peach nail polish that suits my skin tone but this one actually looks nice. Again it doesn't have the best formula but one I can ignore because of the colour.
